About Us

To promote equality and civil rights for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and to promote self-advocacy throughout the state.

Mission

Our beliefs in empowerment and inclusion provide the means by which people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities come together to develop self-advocacy and leadership skills, and give voice to the needs of the disability community. All people, regardless of background, communication style, or disability, will be active participants in their communities. In achieving this, discrimination will be eliminated.

Vision

About

People On the Go Maryland (People On the Go) is a statewide self-advocacy group that is run for and by those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Founded in 1989 as a grassroots organization, People On the Go now has active local county groups across Maryland. The organization promotes inclusion and independence, as persons with disabilities have the right to choose where they want to live with the support they may choose to utilize. A driving force behind legislative changes in the state to give people with disabilities the equity that is deserved, People On the Go believes that all people, regardless of background, communication style, or disability, have the right to control their own lives just as those without intellectual or developmental challenges do.

PARTNERSHIPS

People On the Go Maryland leverages its partnerships that help further the efforts of the organization’s board and general members. The organization is a partnership between the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute.

LEADERSHIP EMPOWERMENT EFFORTS

People On the Go focuses on giving people with disabilities the tools to advocate and to become leaders in their community. People On the Go offers trainings that help members learn how to voice their needs and speak on the behalf of those in the disability community. Through involvement in various committees and training opportunities, People On the Go members have the opportunity to gain leadership skills and take on new roles that further the interests of the organization's mission. As a People On the Go Maryland member, every individual is connected with like-minded people who share similar interests and lived experiences.
